Siemens Strengthens US Additive Manufacturing Efforts

The US AM industry is undergoing rapid change thanks to serial additive manufacturing, and Siemens, a global pioneer in additive manufacturing technology, is increasing its attention on US AM activities.

We are at the beginning of a new era in American industry, one in which the adoption of additive manufacturing will fundamentally alter the environment from start to finish, from product to machine to manufacture. Steve Vosmik, Director of Siemens Additive Manufacturing in the United States, expressed Siemens’ excitement about being at the forefront of this technology.

Siemens is offering its top-notch motion control, automation hardware, digitalization software, and technological skills to help machine builders. Siemens is committed to assisting the domestic AM machine-building community. Siemens will provide as an ecosystem platform for machine makers, machine users, and additive design engineers from its Charlotte Advanced Technology Collaboration Hub (CATCH), which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In order to industrialize their equipment, more than 100 machine manufacturers from across the world are using Siemens automation solutions, according to Rajas Sukthankar, vice president of motion control at Siemens Industry, Inc. “Now is the time to support even more customers and hasten their transition from single machines to additive manufacturing factories in series,” he continues. This is where North America is going.

Siemens offers end-to-end solutions, including product design software, digital twin machine simulation, and virtual execution of manufacturing processes, with full data feedback into the design protocol for necessary adjustments, prior to any machine building, to help AM job shops and Tier One production facilities. Siemens is now a potential partner at every stage of the AM process because of this extensive array of software and hardware options, claims Vosmik.

Through the procurement and installation of an ExOne/Desktop Metal Production System and Meltio Robotic System with the Siemens SINUMERIK RunMyRobot application aboard, Siemens is integrating new technologies into CATCH to utilize metal binder jet technology. An industrial robot’s kinematic path is managed by SINUMERIK RunMyRobot as it integrates with the CNC machine.

In order to meet the rapidly expanding demands of the AM sector, Siemens is also forming an Additive Manufacturing Advisory Board composed of well-known industry professionals in AM from a variety of industries and technical disciplines. “We are looking forward to engaging and collaborating with this talented group of industry experts as we move ahead together into this exciting new world of manufacturing in America,” says Vosmik.
