Hexagon and Hendrick Motorsports Join Forces to Revolutionize Racing Innovation

Hendrick Motorsports, a 14-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, has added Hexagon as its official hardware and software partner for metrology for the ensuing ten years. By utilizing the newest scanning, measuring, and digitalization technologies from Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division, the partnership’s joint objective is to elevate the performance of the race team.

The ten-year contract, which runs through 2032, calls for Hexagon to present-sponsor a 3,000 square foot cutting edge Quality Control Lab on the Hendrick Motorsports facility in Concord, North Carolina. As the team approaches its milestone 300th Cup victory and 500th NASCAR national series engine win, the technical cooperation gives the all-time winningest team at NASCAR’s top level the flexibility to enter competitive conditions with more confidence.

Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports, stated that winning races and titles in NASCAR depend on a persistent focus on quality, accuracy, and attention to the smallest details. “The degree of competitiveness in today’s climate is quite high, and we must maximize whatever we can control. We have confidence in Hexagon’s precise goods as we head into racing weekends on the verge of some incredible accomplishments. With this historic ten-year commitment, we look forward to sharing in many wonderful future successes.

Hendrick Motorsports will be able to measure a greater volume of parts thanks to the integration of several new Hexagon metrology technologies as it works to satisfy short production lead times and racing deadlines. When a team is at the top of its game, it might be difficult to improve performance, so the new technology will allow it to make better decisions about which parts and assemblies are best for the track. Rocker arms, push rods, and valve springs, for example, can perform optimally with tolerance variations of just a few thousandths of an inch or less. The team will be able to determine what combination of components will produce the optimal performance with the aid of rapid and simple metrology data collection.

Commercial operations manager Scott Grumbles of Hexagon said, “Partnering to supply technology that will help Hendrick Motorsports continue to create race-winning performance breakthroughs is an exciting opportunity and further deepens the long-standing partnership we have established. The objective is to ensure that Hendrick Motorsports has the tools it needs to confidently push the limits of performance and maintain winning races by offering metrology solutions that give more flexibility, capacity, and accuracy.

New collaborative robotic inspection capabilities, which enable the team to automate unattended measurement so that it may focus more valuable manpower on other mission-critical tasks, will aid in the elimination of inspection bottlenecks. Greater inspection capacity will result from the acquisition of three new coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and the organization will have the tools necessary to expand its non-contact measurement options as well as its probing capabilities. With additional inspection flexibility, it will be able to scan whole part surfaces with greater efficiency and accuracy and inspect difficult reflecting materials like carbon fiber. Additionally, Hendrick Motorsports’ new Quality Control Lab will be equipped with transportable laser scanners that make it easier to measure parts all across the factory.
