Asahi Kasei Invests in Israeli Startup Castor Technologies

Asahi Kasei has chosen to fund Castor Technologies Ltd. (CASTOR), an Israeli start-up with a focus on the creation of 3D printing software. The investment will enable Asahi Kasei to investigate synergies between its CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) technical service for plastic products and CASTOR’s software in addition to utilizing CASTOR’s products and services.

Since 2015, the 3D printing market has expanded by more than 20% annually on average. This annual growth rate is probably going to increase to 24% with the advent of rapid prototyping and manufacturing, driving up the demand for an optimized technical service and quicker customer response times.

When 3D printing is used to create traditional items, an engineer often chooses the potential parts and makes the decision to use it or not. The engineer may occasionally change the shape to improve 3D printability. In contrast, a bill of materials (BOM) of thousands of parts can be automatically reduced to a manageable number by CASTOR’s software using a proprietary algorithm, along with suggestions for shape changes. By calculating the production lead times, prices, and CO2 emissions of the analyzed items, further manufacturing process optimization for clients is made possible.

Through its engineering plastics-focused CAE technical service, Asahi Kasei has been offering complete, high-precision support for its customers’ product design and development. It is anticipated that CASTOR’s service for straightforward evaluation of part formability and modeling of manufacturing costs would make it possible to respond to client inquiries even more quickly. By using CASTOR’s software and services before Asahi Kasei’s plastic CAE technical service, more complex simulations can be automated.

Yukihiro Bann, Senior General Manager for Business Strategy and Marketing, Mobility & Industrial SBU at Asahi Kasei Corp., stated that “through this investment, we will further investigate the synergies between CASTOR’s software and Asahi Kasei’s CAE expertise.” We want to broaden the scope of technical services that both organizations can supply while also giving our customers access to more sophisticated and automated real-time simulations.
