The Planetarium in Sharjah Reopens with New Technology from ZEISS

On May 10, 2023, Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the Emirate of Sharjah’s sovereign ruler and a member of the Federal Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, reopened the planetarium at the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST).

The planetarium was upgraded by ZEISS with 360-degree full-dome projectors. The digital projectors from the ZEISS VELVET LED line, which were created and manufactured by ZEISS and offer the highest possible sharpness, were chosen by the Arab customer. A seamless video image covering the whole 500 m2 dome is produced by eight projectors. One difficulty for ZEISS was integrating the current star projector from a Japanese manufacturer with the planetarium software ZEISS UNIVIEW, which manages all projectors. By doing this, the client can operate and utilise both the planetarium projector’s starry night sky and digital astronomical presentations. Computer clusters are another component of the technical upgrade; these networked computers run specialised ZEISS software to produce real-time images that are displayed on the dome.

The architecture of the structure is meant to represent the sun, while the inside focuses on science and the starry night sky. Visitors have access to interactive exhibits in many exhibition halls where they can learn about what we currently know about astronomy.

The capital of the Emirate of Sharjah is Sharjah, which is located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is the second-largest city in the UAE after Dubai, with a population of over a million. Sharjah has developed into a significant centre for education in the Gulf. Eight years ago, the SAASST planetarium first opened its doors. It is one of the biggest planetariums in the area, with a dome that measures 18 metres in diameter and 200 seats.
