Renishaw Reveals World’s Smallest Wireless Probe for Machine Tools

At EMO Hannover 2023, the leading provider of engineering technologies, Renishaw, will exhibit its most recent radio transmission probing system. The RMP24-micro, with its 24 mm diameter and 31.4 mm length, is the smallest wireless machine tool probe currently available.

The RMP24-micro not only offers market-leading metrology performance for a wireless probe in this size category but is also incredibly small. It is best suited for compact machines manufacturing high-value, high-precision components, such as those found in the medical, watchmaking, and micro-mechanics sectors, thanks to its measurement repeatability of 0.35 micron 2 and low trigger forces.

Through the RMI-QE radio interface, RMP24-micro communicates with the machine tool controller using an improved radio transmission protocol developed by Renishaw. It uses a 2.4 GHz frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) protocol, which is industry-proven and consistent with radio rules all over the world, and has an operational range of up to 5 meters. With the use of FHSS technology, the probe and interface can switch channels while still communicating with one another, enabling the probing system to work alongside other radio sources including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, and microwaves. Other procedures, however, may work in the same setting without the need for manual intervention.

“We debuted the RMI-QE interface and QE series probes at EMO Milano 2021. Back then, we discussed how the groundwork was being laid for the upcoming line of Renishaw sensors by this new interface and communications protocol. According to Steve Petersen, marketing manager for Renishaw’s Machine Tool Products Division, the RMP24-micro is the first of these innovative smart factory devices. “The RMP24-micro offers part setup and verification in a hand-sized package that is quick, accurate, and dependable. We are thrilled that producers of tiny, highly precise parts, like watch movements and orthopedics, can now take advantage of our process control solutions.

Manufacturing is made efficient and sustainable by Renishaw’s precision measurement and process control technologies, such as the RMP24-micro. They are able to anticipate, spot, and fix process mistakes before they occur. This contributes to the reduction of scrap and, as a result, the energy, time, and resources lost in generating those scrap components.

Without introducing additional equipment, factory automation boosts total output and machine uptime, which improves operational efficiency. Renishaw probing solutions for CNC machining automation enable enterprises to use their machines more efficiently and run round-the-clock operations. Physical automation can be achieved thanks to process automation technologies, which boost productivity and, as a result, can use less energy and waste.
