ZEISS ABIS III: Fully Automated Surface Inspection for Smart Factories

The new sensor combines high-speed inspection with reliable detection of all relevant kinds of defects for the production of sheet-metal pressings and bodies.

The newest version of the ABIS surface inspection system is presented by ZEISS. Due to its objective evaluation and classification of all types of defects, the new sensor ZEISS ABIS III, which was designed, developed, and produced in Germany, enables reliable and early inspection of the entire component surface – within cycle time – making the fully automated system the ideal quality assurance tool for contemporary press shops and forward-thinking body shops.

Fully Automated Surface Inspection and Objective Measuring Technology

All pertinent surface flaws, including dents, bulges, sink marks, ripples, neckings, cracks, and now also scratches, pressure marks, and welding and gluing residues, are quickly and accurately detected by the dependable ZEISS ABIS III sensor. It can inspect both moving and stationary parts inline or at line within cycle time with the highest degree of accuracy. Maximum inspection speed, robustness, reliability, and usability are perfectly balanced by the clever combination of the projector, cameras, patented lighting, and the new software ZEISS ABIS V20. There is no longer a requirement for typical techniques like hand visual inspections or surface preparation using grindstones when employing this sensor. No more claims or cost-intensive sorting processes. In quality assurance, the new surface inspection system thus constantly provides all fundamental data needed for targeted rework, quick surface analyses, and process optimizations.

Innovative Lighting Technology for Detecting Even the Smallest Defects

The new, patented MCL Module is included with the rigorous surface inspection system ZEISS ABIS III. With a detection rate of up to 20 Hz and a sensor scan assessment time of fewer than 0.5 seconds, the Multi-Color-Light technology can identify even the smallest forms of flaws. Real-time processing and visualization of probable component flaws in pressed parts or full body-in-whites are capabilities of the program ZEISS ABIS V20. The updated programme collects inspection results digitally and stores them in a database after evaluating surface flaws in accordance with specific company standards. As a result, the customer can access and receive the quality certificate whenever they need it. Additionally, the ZEISS ABIS III closes the quality control loops between the body shop and the press shop.
