Gary Confalone will receive the 2023 ASQ Hromi Medal, ECM: A Division of In-Place Machining Company is happy to announce. The Hromi Medal Committee of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) honors persons each year who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the inspection profession or the science of inspection. The award winners have advanced the status of inspection through testing, calibration, cost reduction, and professional development by delivering products and procedures throughout their careers.
When Mr. Confalone began his career as a Systems Integration Engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft more than 30 years ago, he made his first contributions to the science of inspection. His desire to advance the industry with more effective technology was sparked during his stay at Sikorksy. He started researching the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter for the Army after becoming a member of the American Helicopter Society, and he later won Sikorsky Aircraft’s Inventor’s Recognition Award for creating a laser boresight system. On the VTOL website, you may download a document titled Laser Based Alignment, Advanced Manufacturing Techniques that describes the benefits of this method.
Through his work with Spatial Metrix Corporation, he continued to advance the inspection area of the evolving laser tracker system after spending a decade inventing and improving laser-based metrology. Mr. Confalone started East Coast Metrology (ECM) in Topsfield, Massachusetts, an engineering company that provides a variety of metrology solutions to a wide range of sectors. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Since then, ECM has expanded exponentially across the globe for more than 20 years.
Mr. Confalone joined the Coordinate Metrology Society’s (CMS) newly established Certification Committee in 2009. This committee is made up of volunteers from the industry who would subsequently work to create the first standardized metrology certification test for both mobile and fixed coordinate measuring devices. He took up the volunteer position of Chairperson of the Certification Committee in 2021 and spent his free time analyzing the industry’s needs for improving standardization in metrology operations.
Mr. Confalone was chosen by his business peers to join the CMS in 2010 and served on the Executive Committee, helping to organize the yearly Coordinate Metrology Society Conference. The CMSC combines technical talks by professionals in the area with practical workshops and unheard-of training opportunities on the best technology and software available in the metrology business. Mr. Confalone was chosen to lead the Executive Committee in 2017. Gary presided over the committee charged with managing the society and the annual conference as part of this three-year volunteer commitment.
Although Mr. Confalone has a long history of contributions to the science of inspection, his passion for the profession’s progress rests in training the next generation of inspectors. He frequently brings ECM engineers to nearby high schools and colleges to speak with students about the potential in engineering and metrology, as well as to give hands-on equipment demos in an effort to pique their interest.
The most recent book co-authored and released by Mr. Confalone is 3D Scanning for Advanced Manufacturing, Design, and Construction. This excellent book offers a thorough introduction to 3D scanning and its uses in the construction and industrial industries. After laying out the background and fundamentals of 3D scanning, it talks about data gathering, processing, and the many practical uses of this technology. Wiley Publishing is now taking orders for the book.
In-Place Machining Company (IPM) strategically bought East Coast Metrology in 2022, and as a result, it is now a part of their Measurement and Alignment Services Division, giving business professionals access to a single source for industrial metrology solutions. The inspection industry is being advanced by Mr. Confalone, who is currently the vice president of ECM. By partnering with OASIS Alignment Services and Exact Metrology, he has created a powerhouse of metrology solutions from a single source and is on track to overtake all competitors to claim the title of top metrology service provider in the world.
