Hexagon Introduces New CMMs with Ultra-High Accuracy

Modular machine configurations optimized for specific applications define the new future-ready Leitz PMM-C platform

Leitz PMM-C coordinates measurement machines (CMMs) of the newest generation have been introduced, according to Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division. In a wide range of precision applications where manufacturers require the highest accuracy and minimize measurement uncertainty, this series has long established the performance benchmark. Thanks to a strong and straightforward modular concept coupled with new capabilities and performance options, that standard is now even higher.

The updated series meets a variety of needs in measurement labs and now also in environments for precision manufacturing, from the small volume, low sub-micron accuracy applications to high sensor flexibility, quick throughput, and near production inspection.

Lukas Kaps, Product Manager for the Ultra-High Accuracy CMM Line at Hexagon, says, “We listen closely to what our customers tell us about what they want from their CMMs – both in terms of core metrology capabilities and adaptability to their evolving application and business needs.” “To advance the series to the next level of ultra-high accuracy inspection, we’ve looked at every aspect of these machines and added new performance-enhancing features and extra possibilities. Furthermore, we’ve made it simple for manufacturers to select and modify CMMs to meet their unique application requirements without having to go through a bewildering array of alternatives.

The Leitz PMM-C series can inspect parts of all shapes and sizes thanks to its six machine sizes, which range from 700 x 700 mm to 2400 x 1600 mm. Manufacturers can define the measurement system that fully addresses their specific application needs by making clear configuration decisions and enhancement possibilities.

According to Joerg Deller, General Manager of Stationary Metrology Devices at Hexagon, “This new generation of machines is part of a wider transformation of our CMM portfolio towards application-focused models optimally configured for manufacturers’ specific measurement challenges.” “This got started when our new OPTIV multisensor line launched successfully. Additionally, in conjunction with the launch of this ground-breaking new generation Leitz PMM-C series, Hexagon’s GLOBAL and Leitz Reference CMMs have been updated with features and enhancement options to better meet current and future application needs for each manufacturer.

With the new Leitz PMM-C, manufacturers first choose a CMM size in one of two base model configurations: the Leitz PMM-C Flexibility model, an option for medium and large machines, is configured for applications that also require high sensor flexibility. It uses ultra-high precision fixed probe heads to achieve the best measurement in high-precision applications with extremely tight form tolerances. The articulating probe head in this type increases the CMM’s capacity to adapt to difficult part shapes and applications. The SENMATION sensor automation system, which permits the use of different tactile and optical sensors within a single measurement routine, is also included in the bundle.

Both models feature three new performance-enhancing options that may be customized from the beginning or set up later as updates to the in-service machine to satisfy changing needs. These choices were added to address the unique productivity needs of each manufacturer.

precision+ addresses the tightest part tolerances for greater precision in a quality measurement room by lowering the CMM’s volumetric measurement error to the next level of sub-micron accuracy. This version provides better accuracy levels for measuring smaller parts or features and offers an even more precise Sweet spot measurement volume for medium- and large-sized machines.

The XT (extended temperature) option enables mid and large-size CMMs to operate directly in a precision production environment with a temperature range of 18-24°C, which is unprecedented for CMMs of this accuracy class. This option is ideal for manufacturers who want to measure close to where their products are made.

Manufacturers can boost production volume by reducing measurement cycle times and removing inspection capacity bottlenecks with the Throughput+ option. As the best in its class among ultra-high accurate CMMs, the option activates the CMM’s full measurement speed to achieve up to 20% faster throughput than the regular configuration.

Additional features that increase usability, increase operator safety, and lower energy usage are also available in the machines of the latest generation: A scanning system that stops the machine when a user or item enters the protected area ensures safe high-speed measurement in CNC mode. Messaging lights on the CMM provide operators with instant awareness of the machine’s operating state. Additionally, in order to conserve energy and operating costs and promote more environmentally friendly manufacturing, the new Eco Mode+ decreases the amount of compressed air used during a normal measurement routine.

The series stands out as the market leader in ultra-high accuracy measurement for nearly all high-precision, tight tolerance applications when combined with the extensive selection of tactile and optical sensors available for Hexagon’s CMMs, optional 4-axis scanning that enables straightforward inspection of extremely complex parts, improved software tools, and simple upgradeability. The Leitz PMM-C is a flexible, long-lasting investment that can be modified to meet present-day and foreseeable user application requirements.
