Renishaw Launches Welsh Government’s Innovation Strategy

The Welsh Government unveiled its new innovation plan for Wales on February 27, 2023, at the South Wales location of Renishaw, a leading provider of engineering technologies worldwide. The Welsh Government described its aim to become an innovation-based nation and offer better healthcare, jobs, and prosperity for businesses and local communities during the launch event at the Company’s production facility in Miskin, close to Cardiff.

The Welsh Government’s innovation strategy, which has ambitions to address four core areas — education, economy, health and wellbeing, and climate and nature — was presented at the event by the minister for the economy, Vaughan Gething. Renishaw presented its STEM education centre for neighbourhood schools, spoke with attendees about its £65 million investment to increase manufacturing capacity with a focus on sustainability, and gave tours of its advanced manufacturing facility, which produces metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) systems. All of this was done to support the strategy at the event.

The Minister stated, “We decided to launch our plan at Renishaw because it symbolises an employer investing here in Wales. “The company delivers on every mission area; offering STEM outreach opportunities for our kids in neighbourhood schools, previously collaborating with our NHS to develop 3D printing techniques for surgical procedures, and heavily investing in low-carbon buildings which will increase manufacturing capacity while helping to meet their Net Zero emissions targets.”

“Our economic, education, wellness, and climate missions are supported by our drive for Wales to be a leading, innovation-based nation,” the Minister said when discussing the new national innovation strategy. to have a culture that fosters innovation, collaboration, and skill development. where the negative effects on the environment are minimised while also achieving higher levels of performance, productivity, and entrepreneurship.

Both the Programme for Government and the cooperation agreement between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru, whose leader Adam Price spoke in favour of the new strategy, entail the creation of an innovation strategy for Wales.

At the opening ceremony, Renishaw Medical’s managing director, Rupert Jones, also spoke. He told the audience that one of the company’s co-founders’ Chepstow home was where Renishaw spent its earliest years as a budding company. “We are honoured to have been selected as the host for this crucial strategy launch, and it was a pleasure to be able to highlight our own innovation in Wales to the Minister, the leader of Plaid Cymru, and other attendees,” he said. Almost 700 people from all over South Wales are currently employed at the Bosch-owned Miskin factory, where they are principally engaged in the creation of our industry-leading measurement and production systems.
