Global engineering technologies business Renishaw has partnered with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) to highlight how Scottish manufacturers can employ cutting-edge technologies like additive manufacturing (AM) to enhance their operations. This institute brings together business, academia, and government to cooperate on ground-breaking manufacturing research that will aid regional businesses in increasing productivity and workforce skill levels. Renishaw has installed AM systems at the new NMIS headquarters, which will open later this year, as part of its membership. Renishaw will also offer its knowledge to members, enabling them to create lighter, more effective components for high-value industries.
As a part of the NMIS Digital Factory, Renishaw will work with other NMIS members to share its expertise in ongoing projects, assisting manufacturers in realizing the full potential of additive manufacturing. This includes initiatives where manufacturers utilize additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to create durable yet lightweight products by creating intricate geometries and utilizing cutting-edge materials. Renishaw also offers the center a variety of technology, allowing manufacturers to create a successful end-to-end process. Renishaw can support initiatives and help Scottish industries maintain their competitiveness by providing its assortment of probing technologies and other digital tools.
Ewan Durie, Area Sales Manager at Renishaw, said, “We are thrilled to witness the continuous growth of the manufacturing industry in Scotland as a member of the University of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and now a member of NMIS. We can better understand how manufacturers in other industries may benefit from additive manufacturing by working with NMIS and other industry experts, and we can modify our technology to meet their needs. We intend to inspire more manufacturers to learn about the advantages of this cutting-edge technology by hosting our equipment at its location for other firms to use and by organizing a technology day for AM later this year.
“To further promote the development of the manufacturing sector in Scotland, Renishaw recently switched its membership from the AFRC to the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland. Stephen Fitzpatrick, director of the NMIS Digital Factory, said, “We look forward to strengthening our relationship even more and inspiring new relationships and collaborations with other members and industrial partners. “This is an exciting time for us as we get ready to move into our new headquarters and continue to fund and create cutting-edge additive manufacturing methodologies and technologies. Renishaw joining us on this adventure makes us very happy.
“By collaborating with engineering specialists like Renishaw, we can provide Scottish businesses the tools and know-how they need to push the boundaries of innovative manufacturing. By disseminating examples of successful projects, we hope to encourage Scottish manufacturers to adopt new technologies and learn how to make the most of tools like additive manufacturing.
The NMIS is a network of partners across Scotland that consists of industry-led manufacturing research and development centers that were brought together to support the manufacturing sector. In order to increase efficiency, make businesses more competitive, and improve the capabilities of our existing and future workforces, members of industry, academia, and the public sector collaborate on manufacturing research.
