Adaptive Contact Scanning Using Renishaw® Equipped CNC CMMs
The EquatorTM flexible gauging system is one of the Renishaw-equipped CNC CMMs that Verisurf Software, Inc. is using for adaptive scanning. In order to obtain profiles of ill-defined shapes, components are scanned. The data is processed by Verisurf software to produce a precise digital twin for engineering and manufacturing.
The soon-to-be-released Verisurf 2024 will be on display at Control, May 9–12, Messe Stuttgart, Germany, Hall 3, Booth 3512, and will contain the adaptive scanning solution among its many new productivity benefits.
Through the Verisurf Device Interface (VDI), Verisurf controls Renishaw-equipped CNC CMMs to locate and scan ill-defined objects, such as prismatic geometry and intricate free-formed profiles. Adaptive scanning continuously modifies the scan path based on probe deflection, in contrast to passive scanning, which depends on a predetermined scan path. This enables the probe to automatically investigate and digitize the component. The adaptive scanning technology was initially created and offered by Renishaw as a component of its Cyclone standalone scanning device.

The only measuring, reverse engineering, and inspection software with intelligent Model-Based Definition (MBD) are Verisurf, which is developed on a full-featured 3D CAD/CAM platform. This maintains model-based digital continuity while ensuring data integrity and enabling users to carry out metrology processes in a seamless CAD environment. For complete interoperability, Verisurf software works with all CAD file types, and the Verisurf Device Interface (VDI) interacts with and controls all programmable and portable CMMs. By swiftly capturing and processing measurement data for real-world metrology applications with repeatable process control, the software’s modular design enables users to quickly go from reverse engineering to inspection to tool creation across the manufacturing enterprise.
